Plan product data, create suitable metafield definitions and test how values appear in your storefront, including hybrid Webflow and Shopify builds.

- Test missing values and the actual storefront integration.
Start with the product questions
Product pages become difficult to maintain when ingredients, care instructions and dimensions are pasted into one long description in different formats. Structured fields make those details easier to edit and display consistently.
Choose one product family and list the questions customers ask before buying. Decide which answers vary by product, which vary by variant and which are shared across the range. A product’s care instructions and a variant’s size are different kinds of information and should not be modelled interchangeably.
Define the field before filling it
Shopify metafields extend resources with custom data. A definition establishes the field and validation; individual products then receive their own values. Prefer an appropriate standard definition when one fits, or create a custom definition for a distinct requirement.
Use clear names and suitable types. A number with a unit should not become a loosely formatted paragraph. The definition documentation explains the supported setup. Keep a short field dictionary so editors use the same meaning across the catalogue.

Test with three real products
Before completing the whole catalogue, enter values for a typical product, one with unusually long information and one where the optional field is empty. Review the wording with the person responsible for product information.
A cosmetics example might include an approved application guide and an ingredient list. Enter verified product information rather than generating medical or performance claims. If a section is not applicable, define whether the storefront hides it or shows an explanation. Do not leave an empty heading and a large gap.
Practical takeaway: Good product fields encode a clear meaning, not just a place to paste more text.
Connect the value to the storefront
In a compatible Shopify theme, use a dynamic source on the relevant section or block setting to display a metafield. The available connection depends on the setting and field type. The dynamic sources documentation describes that relationship.
A Webflow front end connected to Shopify needs its own data-display implementation. Adding a Shopify metafield does not automatically create a matching Webflow element or CMS field. Confirm which integration reads the value, how it is refreshed and where the layout is controlled.
Keep the catalogue maintainable
Document the field owner, allowed values and storefront destination. Use that document when onboarding a new editor or importing a supplier catalogue. Adding several almost-identical fields because the first one was poorly named creates work later.
After changing a definition or theme, test the same three representative products again. Check product and variant selection, missing information, mobile wrapping and purchase flow. Product data is useful only when it stays accurate through the entire path from editing to display.
