Define a small set of meaningful website events, document when they fire and connect enquiry counts with the quality of the resulting conversations.

A dashboard can show a great deal of activity without answering whether the website helps the business. Start your measurement plan with a decision you expect to make, then collect the evidence needed for that decision.

Write the business question first

A service business may need to know which pages lead to relevant enquiries. That question requires more than page views. Describe the journey from entry page to service evaluation, enquiry submission and eventual conversation.

Choose one primary outcome and a few supporting signals. A click on the enquiry button indicates interest, while a completed request indicates that the visitor finished the form. A qualified conversation happens later and may live in a CRM. Keep those stages distinct so the report does not present every interaction as the same kind of success.

Define exactly what each event means

Google Analytics uses events to measure interactions and occurrences. It distinguishes automatically collected, enhanced measurement, recommended and custom events. Check what is already collected before adding another event for the same behaviour.

Write a measurement specification with the trigger, relevant context and test method. For example, an enquiry-completed event should follow a confirmed submission rather than a button click. Use stable page or form identifiers where helpful. Keep personal form answers out of analytics event labels and parameters.

Test absence and duplication

Complete a valid enquiry and verify that the expected event appears once. Then submit an invalid form, refresh the confirmation page and try again from a different entry point. These tests reveal whether the event represents the intended action or merely a page state.

Compare the analytics count with the form system for a small test period, recognising that consent choices, blocking and implementation differences can create gaps. Investigate discrepancies rather than forcing the totals to match. Record known limitations so the team understands what the report can support.

Turn reporting into a recurring decision

Review the primary outcome by useful dimensions such as entry page or campaign, while avoiding tiny segments that invite overinterpretation. Add a simple quality review from the person handling enquiries.

Use the findings to choose an action: clarify an offer, fix a form or improve a weak destination. Keep a dated record of changes so later comparisons have context. If traffic sources changed at the same time as the page, acknowledge that before attributing a difference to the design. Measurement becomes valuable when it supports a specific next decision.

Name an event after what happened, and interpret it only as evidence of that event.

Put it into practice

Your report shows 40 enquiry-button clicks and 12 received forms. Which number represents completed enquiries?

Show the suggested approach

The received forms are closer to completed submissions, subject to checks for duplicates and spam. Button clicks show an earlier stage. Investigate the gap as a journey question rather than reporting 40 completed enquiries. These numbers are illustrative.
