Design a Resource Library with Useful Search, Filters and Empty States

Help readers find the right resource with clear categories, accurate result counts, recoverable empty states and dependable article links.

A resource library becomes harder to browse as it grows. Adding a search field and several filters can help, but only when the underlying categories are consistent and the interface explains what the controls are doing.
Organise around the reader’s task
Review the questions people bring to the library. A buyer may want implementation guidance, a comparison or proof from a project. These needs are more useful starting points than an internal team’s publishing departments.
Choose a small number of clear categories and define how editors assign them. If almost every article receives every category, the filters provide little value. Keep the distinction between topic and format visible when both matter. For example, Migration is a topic while Checklist is a format.
Make the active state understandable
Show which filters are selected and provide an obvious way to clear them. If search and categories combine, decide whether the result must match both. Communicate that behaviour through the interface and verify it with realistic examples.
Result counts must reflect the current results, not a fixed total copied into every category. Test combinations that produce many, one and zero items. A visitor should not have to infer whether an empty page means there is no matching content or whether the filter has stopped working.

Design recovery when nothing matches
An empty state should name the situation and offer a next action. Let the reader clear a filter, change the query or browse all resources. Preserve what they typed so they can revise it.
For a hypothetical library, a search for “WordPress transfer” might miss an article labelled only “Migration”. Review common vocabulary and descriptive summaries before assuming the search engine is the whole problem. Content labels and search behaviour work together. Keep a small set of realistic queries as regression checks when the library changes.
Keep articles reachable beyond the interface
Make each article available through a normal link and a useful category path. Google’s pagination guidance explains that content loaded incrementally still needs to be discoverable. Do not assume that a crawler will perform every search or click every interactive control.
Test back navigation and the state after opening an article. Decide whether returning to the library should preserve the reader’s filters. On mobile, ensure the controls do not consume the entire first screen. The library should help people reach content rather than make them manage a complicated search tool.
A filter is useful only when readers understand both the selection and its effect.
